Dear Families
Teachers are currently busy finalising reports (to be distributed on Thursday 29 June – week 10) and working with students on documenting their learning goals. These goals and actions that students have planned will be shared with families at the Three-Way Conferences next week (Monday 19 – Friday 23 June). Appointments closed today at 12:00pm. If you have not made a booking yet, please contact your child’s teacher directly. While appointments are fifteen minutes apart, actual appointment times are ten minutes. There is a five-minute allowance for families to move between classes and for teachers to prepare for their next appointment.
From time to time parents may like to know more about how we do things here at school, please contact me if there is anything you would like to discuss about our school. I can be contacted via email: anne.reeves@decyp.tas.gov.au, you can make an appointment by contacting admin who will do this for you or come and have a chat to me in the playground before school.
Just to let you know, Mr Peter Eddleston will be taking long service leave for the last week of term and the first week of term three. Have a lovely break, Mr Eddleston and enjoy re-uniting with your family. Music will be taught during this time by Mr Matt Dean.
I will also be on long service leave for the last two weeks of term, I will be taking time to travel with my family.
There are some exciting events coming up at our school:
- Word Study information for families. Mrs Bec Corney and Mrs Caitlin Rice will be running two sessions on Wednesday 2 August at 9:00am and 3:15pm. These sessions aim to inform you of our Word Study program which is based on the Orton-Gillingham approach. Sessions will be held in the literacy room (adjacent the library) and will go for approximately 45 minutes. Come along and find out about South Hobart Primary’s teaching of phonics, reading and writing! Please note that the afternoon session is a repeat of the morning one.
- Arts Week – week 6, term 3, 28 August – 1 September. During the week there will be performances at school from class in music or performing arts. All students will have visual art on display and much more! Watch this space! This will be followed on Saturday 2 September by SoHo on Stage.
- Wellbeing Week – week 10, term 3, 25 – 29 September. This event is supported by our school nurse, Laura Leworthy. Keep an eye out for this!
- A cyber safety week is being planned for term four. SHPS values online safety and respect in all domains. More information to come!
A reminder of the School Association supported bush dance on Saturday 1 July. There was information about this in the last newsletter and a flyer was sent home to the eldest in the family last Thursday. Many thanks to Ben and Jo for organising, it sounds like it is going to be a great night!

Duty of Care and Teacher Start Times
Teachers’ duty of care commences at 8:30am. Their hours of work also commence at 8:30am. At South Hobart our teachers are very dedicated and hard-working and they start arriving from 7:00am. This is work outside of their required hours which they do because they want to do the best for our students. Please do not enter classrooms prior to 8:30am, because your child’s teacher is preparing and planning for teaching and learning and has chosen this time when they can be most productive. Teachers welcome meetings and catch-ups which are pre-arranged so that they can give their full attention to information families need to share. Please approach your child’s teacher directly if you need to make a time to chat with them.
Addressing Issues Between Students at School
Sometimes at school where there are issues between students. When issues are observed by staff or reported to staff they are followed up with all involved parties. Sometimes, a student will report an issue to their family who report it to staff, again it is follow up with all parties.
Depending on the issue, follow up may involve individual student discussions, small group student discussions, restorative conversations amongst students, sanctions (such as loss of play time, loss of access to particular activities or resources, internal suspension or formal suspension) and parent contact.
It is important that any issues that occur at school are followed up through the school. Staff are able to speak with all students who may be involved in an issue, including witnesses. This enables us to gain accurate information about what has happened. If a reported issue is addressed and reoccurs it is vital that it is reported again. That tells us that different actions need to be applied. Often follow up involves an educative focus for students.
It is not appropriate for parents to approach students in the playground or on the way to and from school to address issues with them.
If you have any queries about this, please contact me here at school.

Any medication that your child may require at school needs to be signed in at the office with the appropriate forms completed. (Form A for over the counter medication, Form B for prescribed medication.)
Students should not have medication, including paracetamol, in their school bags. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping all our students safe.

The agenda is attached and new ideas are welcome either on the night or by writing to sohoparents@gmail.com and your email will be raised in ‘correspondence in’.
Other than our association meeting, the next social event is our Bush Dance on Saturday July 1 from 6pm-9pm.
We look forward to seeing you there.
