Dear Families
Last week our Year 3 – 6 students participated in a fabulous athletic carnival at Sandown Park. We enjoyed beautiful weather and the shade of the lovely trees along the perimeter. Even more rewarding, we saw students getting in and giving the events their best effort and cheering on their teams. Well done everyone! Thank you to parents who volunteered their time to take on roles at the carnival; we appreciate your help. Thank you, Mr Nichols, for organising the carnival.
Yesterday Year 3 and 5 students commenced NAPLAN. Students are to be commended for giving this their best effort and working through any nervous feelings they may have had. Several students reported that they enjoyed the writing opportunity yesterday.
I would also like to wish all our families a Happy World Maths Day today!
We have been fortunate enough to engage Jon Madin again this year. Jon will be here on Monday 29 and Tuesday 30 April. Each day will conclude with a performance by the students of what they have learnt during the day. Families are invited to attend these performances (approximately 2:15pm), so save the date! A timetable for classes will be shared soon.
Regards
Anne Reeves

Just a reminder that nominations for the School Association Committee close next Friday 22 March. Please consider this great opportunity to be a part of this group who work closely with the school and myself. Being a member of the committee and attending meetings gives you an insight into the educational opportunities provided along with extra-curricular activities. The commitee meets twice per term at 6:30 for 7:00pm start.
Nomination forms are available from the office, or request via SZapp that one be sent home with your child or by using the link below.
Please contact Anne Reeves here at school if you have any queries.
Being a part of the committee is a great way to connect with other parents and be involved in the school. Please consider nominating to be on the SA committee.
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are having a blitz on Head Lice (also called nits) here at South Hobart Primary School.
We will be running two parent information sessions in the school library about Head Lice on Thursday 21st March at 830am and 3.10pm – all welcome to attend.
Once everyone has had an opportunity to attend these sessions, on the 21st March we will ask that all parents check their children for Head Lice (regardless of how recently you have checked for them), and if treatment is required commence treatment immediately. If you find your child has them, please commence treatment immediately. You are of course, welcome to check earlier if you wish.
Staff will also be provided with information about actions they can take to try to reduce the spread of head lice. We can work in partnership to try to reduce the amount of head lice in our school.
Enclosed in this newsletter is information around recognising and managing nits. Please note that treatment is not once off: Raising Children Network Advise to repeat every 2-3 days for 2 weeks, until a full combing doesn’t show any eggs or lice on the entire scalp. For those who wish to have more information between now and the parent information sessions on the 21st March, here is the link to the Raising Childrens Network.

For those wishing to access further information, please feel free to contact me via the front office.

Thursday 21 March is Harmony Day, which is a culmination of Harmony Week. Harmony Week is “the celebration that recognises our diversity and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds.
It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.”
At South Hobart we will be celebrating everyone by buddy classes having a picnic on the oval at morning tea (no food sharing – byo). Families are invited to bring their own morning tea and join us! We will be having an extended break starting at 10:45am.
Students, families and staff are invited to wear their cultural dress for the day. Alternatively, wear orange!
Families are asked to enter via the front office, but as per assemblies, will not need to sign in. Please be aware we have students with food allergies (nuts, eggs, gluten.) so ask for no food sharing with students (unless they are your children!) and to remain seated while eating.
As part of a strong effort to improve narrative writing, 4B have been analysing the work of authors such as C.S. Lewis, JRR Tolkien and Roald Dahl. We have noticed that they all use techniques such as plentiful adjectives and figurative writing to enrich their descriptions. We have written brief characterisations using Dahl's technique of emphasising personality as well as appearance and of having at least one powerful simile with each.
Please come to the foyer where you can see the students’ writing more closely. 2A’s problem solving is also still on display for you to enjoy.
Year 6 Band Performance at the Statewide Leaders' Forum
Last fortnight the Year 6 band performed at the Leaders’ Forum at My State Arena. Sometimes the after lunch time slot at a meeting or conference is tricky to deliver, but our band had the audience on the edge of their seat with their amazing performance! As the proud principal of our students I received many, many comments from other leaders, complimenting our students on not only their playing but their professional presentation in their uniforms and their conduct on the stage. Congratulations to all members of the Year 6 band!
School Association Liason Person
Dear Parents,
We are seeking one parent/carer from each class in the school to act as a liaison with other parents in that class. The role of this person is to make a list of other parents, and contact people when we need volunteers for an event. We are still looking for coordinators for 5a and 6a.
It is a new system we are trialling to 'share the load' of volunteering and to include parents who may not have participated before in a volunteering capacity.
If you think you could act in this coordinating role we foresee the duties as:
- Collecting details from as many parents as possible in your class (a good way to do this is to get the teacher to put your contact details into a seesaw message)
- Send an email / text / WhatsApp to that group when we need volunteers (with a signup link)
- This will likely only happen 4-6 times over the course of the year.
If you are interested, please contact the school via SZapp with your details (name, email address, phone)
Many thanks for your support,
Ouita Spalding
(Acting Chair, South Hobart School Association)

Scholastic Book Club Parent Guide
Book club is run by parent volunteers and raises money for the school library to spend on books and learning resources by way of reward dollars.
Orders for Issue 2 close on the 25th of March. Happy reading!
Sushimatic has raised the prices for sushi this year. While the school Association has traditionally absorbed such increases, we've opted to to pass on on a partial rise to support the sustainability of the sushi program and facilitate reinvestment of it's profits into school.
The funds from the association contribute to social mevents, kinder esstentials like hats and library books, and various educational resources as needed throughtout the year.
We hope for your continued support of the sushi program.
The new prices will be Sushi at $4.30 and Inari at $2.80.
Orders need to be made by 9am on the Thursday before using the Qkr! app.
The Cup Tower Race – Written by 1B.
Last week on Thursday we had a challenge with our buddies 5A.
We built paper cup towers without using our hands! We had to use string and a rubber band. We tied the string to the rubber band, and we pulled it over the cup and released it softly when we got it on the tower. We had to communicate and work together.
It was hard, amazing and fun!
The Android Phone issue has now been resolved, parents/users can now download the App from the Google Play Store.
Can you please advise your parents/users.
Apologies for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.
Regards
The Qkr Team
