Dear Parents
Another busy week of learning has passed in our classrooms and playground. Many
classes participated in Potato Olympics last week. This involved developing profiles of
countries and athletes and the potatoes participating in many Olympic-styled events
requiring measuring and timing. In Friday’s sharing assembly we were treated to 3/4A’s
Olympic athletes oath; potato style!
This week Miss McDonald, Ms Gisborne, Ms Miller and I were privileged to be a part of
Albuera Street Primary School’s Instructional Rounds. I know the benefit that we gained from hosting our own rounds here at South Hobart last term, so it was very rewarding for us to be able to contribute in this valuable way to another school.
Thank you to everyone who attended the School Association meeting on Tuesday. It is
great to see so much enthusiasm from families in being involved in our school.
Bequest
Late last year we were notified that South Hobart Primary School was the beneficiary of
the estate of a member of the South Hobart community. His estate has bequeathed
some money to the school for “general sporting use to encourage sports participation,
with a priority to encourage soccer participation.”
To ensure these funds are used effectively I am establishing a small consultative
committee to discuss ideas for the use of the funds. I am seeking two people, someone
from the South Hobart Primary Soccer Club and another parent not connected to
soccer. These two people with join with myself, Mr Nichols and our SBM, Julieann
Graham to discuss this matter. Please contact me via email if you are interested in
supporting this process by Thursday 29 August 2024 (week 6).

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Due to whooping cough being present in our school community, we are providing you with information about whooping cough in the link attached.
Whooping Cough (Pertussis) fact sheet | Tasmanian Department of Health
Whilst whooping cough usually starts with similar symptoms to other flu like illnesses – runny nose, fever, cough – the coughing can get worse, with severe, uncontrollable coughing being followed by vomiting or a gasping breath which results in a “whooping” sound.
If you notice whooping cough signs and symptoms, we ask you keep your child home and have them tested so you can follow the correct advice and access appropriate health care if you or your family require it. This does include keeping you child at home until symptoms have resolved.
Please consider ensuring your whooping cough vaccination is up to date.
Any queries, please contact our school health nurse Monday – Thursday via the school office (6223 6040).
Laura, School Health Nurse
What Matters Writing Competition
We have been looking at persuasive writing in 2/3A. This led us to advertisements and how they persuade us to buy or do things.
We looked at the colours that the adverts used, the jingles and slogans that stay in our heads for days and the choice of words that they use.
We then went on to create our own adverts. We had fun creating silly and useless products but also trying to persuade people to buy them, using all of the tricks we discovered.
Look through all the images below to see our posters during our creating stage. The final posters are now on display in the front hallway for you to all admire.
The media were interested in hearing about the students’ role in the new interpretation boards about the platypus and the rivulet.
They also asked the students about the posters on our fence line which our Year 5
students developed with Pete Walsh last year. The students were able to tell the media about what they had learnt in the process.
Despite all of us feeling a little nervous, we were happy to talk about the platypus and promote the learning and environmental values of our school.
Thank you to the students for being such wonderful representatives of our school.
If you would like to view the interpretation boards the can be found in these locations:

The annual Schools Triathlon is held in November at Bellerive Beach. The coordination
and organising of South Hobart students’ participation in this event is extremely time
consuming and onerous, it is no longer feasible for staff to do this. The amount of time
and staff required to organise the triathlon negatively impacts on our core business of
teaching and learning. This additional workload also delays end of year tasks such as
class creation, transition, assemblies and planning for the following year.
For this event to go ahead this year I am seeking a group of parents who are willing to
organise this event. For the organisation five to six people will be required, with
approximately twenty adults needed to attend on the day, all day.
If you are able to be a part of this organising group, could you please contact me by
Wednesday 21 August in order for this event to go ahead.

Thank you.
SHPS had a visit from an Olympian.
On Monday we were very lucky to have a visit from our famous Olympian parent Kynan Maley. Kynan competed in the 2012 London Olympics in the slalom canoeing. He bought his kayak in and had a great chat with our keen students. Angus was lucky enough to get to try on his racing gear.
Thanks for coming in!
bit big. It was surprising how much gear that had to wear and what it felt like going into
the canoe. I bent my knees back, I knelt on my knees. It was pretty cool meeting someone who has been to the Olympic Games."
Grade 6 Rivulet Clean up
By Manon, Becca and Xanthe
On Friday the 12th of August, a group of students, lead by Ms. Price, from the Environment Leadership Group walked along the rivulet track to meet a Bushcare enthusiast and Hobart Council worker, Bec Johnston. The students were given gloves, grabbers, and bags to collect litter. They were downstream from the McRobies Rd runoff pipe. The pipe has a net sock around the end, this sock collects rubbish from the McRobies tip. When full the sock weighs about 2 tonnes and has to be lifted out by a crane, the council empties the sock about once a month. Unfortunately, it doesn’t catch all the litter, and the students used grabbers to pick up the excess rubbish to put in bags. A problem was the Styrofoam as it was in lots of pieces and very hard to collect all of it. Just before the students left, Bec talked to them about sorting the rubbish that was collected. Some of the student’s remarks were;
“I enjoyed walking through the ferns, but the amount of rubbish was disturbing”-Archie
“There was so much Styrofoam that it was holding up the rocks”-Hugo
“I liked learning about rubbish collection”-Xanthe
“I really enjoyed this trip because I love walking through nature”-Mad
“It was like a treasure hunt; I found a toy crocodile!”-Blaize
