Dear Families
There was a wonderful community feel at our Book Week Parade last week with many parents and grandparents attending our parade and supporting our students and staff as they celebrated their love of books and their favourite characters.
Thank you to families for your support and for the time and effort you put in to helping prepare students' costumes for this event. (And thanks to some of you for dressing up yourselves!)
Another highlight for me last week was being visited by Echo and Hana from 5B. Echo shared a documentary and Hana a power point which they produced as part of their HASS inquiry. What an amazing effort! They have both gone to incredible lengths to deeply understand their subject matter and present it in individual and thoughtful ways. If you are down near 5B I am sure they will be happy to show you.
Earlier this week I visited 1A who were learning about place value. Vivian and Hugo were sharing their thinking about ten ones making 10, and ten tens making one hundred. Students were also able to think through my question of what you would have if you had ten one hundreds. It highlighted to me the importance of talking about thinking and the value of discussion in helping learners understand concepts and ideas.
Regards
Anne Reeves

Camp 2025 Information Pack
This afternoon, Anne Reeves met with all year 5 students and gave them a briefing about the camp and an information pack to take home to their parents/carers. The documents included in this envelope are:
- Covering letter with upcoming dates/deadlines.
- Major Excursion Consent Form
- Medical and Dietary Form
- Aquatic Activity Consent Form
- Kit List
In the event your child was not at school today, we will hold the pack until Thursday 5 Sept, after which it will be posted home.
We’d also like to thank the families who have already made their camp payments.
Just a reminder that the parent information briefing will be held in the first week back at school next term on Tuesday, 15th October at 5:30 pm. Students are not required at this meeting. Please bring all of the above forms to the meeting or have your child put these in their classroom tub at any time before then.
Three Way Conferences (3WC)
These will be held in week 9 (16 – 20 September). The purpose of the Three-Way Conferences is for students to share their progress on their learning goals with their families. Students take a lead in these sessions with teachers supporting them to prepare for the meeting in the preceding week. Students choose the learning artefacts that best show how their learning is going.
Bookings for the Three-Way Conferences open on Thursday 5 September at 9:00am and close on Thursday 12 September at 12:00pm. If you have not made a booking by this time, you will need to make a time directly with the teacher. The link below will be live on Thursday 5 September.
Hats!
Our school Sun Smart Policy states that sun protection should be worn from September through to April. While it seems strange to be thinking about wearing hats when the weather is so cold, next Monday will be the 2 September and hats will be required by students and staff when outside to learn or play. |
In 5B we have been learning to identify line and rotational symmetries.
Here are some examples of our Symmetry Art.
Please have a look around your home and donate what you can. Donations should be taken straight to 1A or 6A classrooms or you can contact Lelia on 0439 370 916.
SHPS Garden Market is coming and it’s Planting Time!
Have your plants, seedlings, flowers or produce, ready for 20 October! Be able to share your plant babies in seedling trays, pots large or small.
This year our Primary School Swimming Carnival will be held at the Clarence Aquatic Centre on Wednesday the 4th of September.
Students will compete from 9.30am to 2.20pm.
Students will need to bring a towel, bathers, goggles, and a plastic bag for your wet gear. We would like the students to have their bathers on before they reach the pool so they do not need to use the change rooms on arrival. Caps will be provided in house colours.
Spectators are welcome to attend the carnival and we are also looking for volunteers to help out on the day.
We also encourage students to wear their house colours on the day
Wattle is Yellow, Banksia is Purple and Myrtle is Green! Students will be sitting in their house groups.
Students will depart school at 9am and leave the pool at 2.30pm.
Events include:
Novelty race – Noodle Race
25m Freestyle,
25m Backstroke
25m Breaststroke
50m Freestyle
Relays 4x25
100m Freestyle
We are holding our Swimming Carnival on the 4th of September 2024 at Clarence Aquatic Centre and for us to be able to run this event efficiently we will need some parent volunteers. The event runs between 9:30am and 2:30pm, so if you can give any amount of time between these times please email Mark Nichols.
All volunteers will need their WWVP card and have watched the Safeguarding video.

Headlice
Dear Parents,
Headlice can be difficult to treat. One of the current recommended treatments is called wet combing. Wet combing includes:
- Lather hair in conditioner and leave for at least 15 mins (a shower cap may be useful here).
- Using a fine toothcomb, comb the nits out, and wipe onto paper towel. Stop combing when the comb is coming out clear. This may take up to 30 minutes.
- Continue daily treatment until a full combing doesn’t show any eggs or lice on the comb.
- If one child has lice, treat all family members at the same time.
- Wet coming takes place daily for two weeks due to eggs that may not have hatched yet.
For further information, visit your school nurse Laura.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Due to whooping cough being present in our school community, we are providing you with information about whooping cough in the link attached.
Whooping Cough (Pertussis) fact sheet | Tasmanian Department of Health
Whilst whooping cough usually starts with similar symptoms to other flu like illnesses – runny nose, fever, cough – the coughing can get worse, with severe, uncontrollable coughing being followed by vomiting or a gasping breath which results in a “whooping” sound.
If you notice whooping cough signs and symptoms, we ask you keep your child home and have them tested so you can follow the correct advice and access appropriate health care if you or your family require it. This does include keeping you child at home until symptoms have resolved.
Please consider ensuring your whooping cough vaccination is up to date.
Any queries, please contact our school health nurse Monday – Thursday via the school office (6223 6040).
Laura, School Health Nurse
