Dear Families

As we reach the end of any term I am always amazed at how quickly the year is flying by.

In our whole school assembly on Monday we were able to recognise some of the wonderful opportunities that South Hobart students have undertaken this term; choir, a capella, Young Archies, Brixhibition, Maths Relay, What Matters writing competition, Children’s Mayor, History Challenge and the Winter Sports Gala. During the term students have also participated in the SoHo Olympics, band workshops, interschool chess competitions, Year 3 – 6 swimming carnival, ICAS competitions and Year 2 choir. This is in addition to the learning opportunities provided each day by teachers in classrooms.

Last week families, students and teachers had the opportunity to sit together in three-way conferences so students could share their progress on their learning goals. While attendance was down on last term’s conferences, those who attended reported that they found these very valuable.

I hope our students, families and staff have a restful and relaxing holiday. I am sure we will all come back revitalised for the very busy term four ahead of us.

2025 Planning

Planning for 2025 is well underway. Class structures are still being determined and will be shared as soon as this is finalised. In the meantime, if you have any information about your child and their class placement that will assist in the development of 2025 classes please email me directly (anne.reeves@decyp.tas.gov.au) with 2025 Class Placement in the subject line. Requests for specific teachers will not be considered as staffing is not yet finalised. Please provide information by Friday 27 September.

Next term, Friday 25 October is a student free day. This is a professional learning day for staff who will be engaged in a variety of learning activities and planning tasks.

Unfortunately, due to staffing challenges we will be unable to provide supervision on this day.

Julieann, our school business manager, and I have been working with two parents, Ben and PJ, to gain some ideas for improving our bike parking at school. With their input we have purchased some new bike hoops which we are aiming to instal during the holidays. Many thanks to Ben and PJ for their input and support.

A reminder that there is bike parking in front of the windows of the main building, adjacent to the path towards the kindergarten playground. Students and parents are welcome to park their bikes here.

It is very important that bikes are secured with a sturdy lock. Unfortunately, a few weeks ago a bike was stolen during school hours.

In Prep B we have been busy book making!

We have enjoyed the freedom to create any kind of book we’d like.  Some of us have written information books about things we know lots about, other have written stories from our imagination.

The inspiration for these lessons came from a PL that Elsie and Riki attended on bookmaking with Lisa Burman.

Arts Week – Week 4, Term 4

During Arts Week students will present either a musical item or a drama performance, they will also have visual art pieces on display. A timetable for performances will be out early in term four.

In News and Notices last week I asked if any parents were artists or had family member who were artists who would be willing to come into the school and speak with a couple of classes about their work. I have so far had four parents respond and would love to have more! Students would benefit from hearing more about how the arts feature in and add to people’s lives. Last month a number of Year 5 and 6 students were selected to attend the trials for a variety of sport as part of the Winter Gala Day. They attended various trial sessions across Hobart to gain selection to the teams which were made up of students from a number of schools.

Congratulations to all the students who tried out and to those who were selected for teams. The following students attended the trials; Oliver H., George T., Logan, Hudson, Jack W., Hugo S., Eleanor, Zac, Oliver E., Forest, Josh, Florence, Izzy, Xanthe, Sophie, Mavi, Frankie, Willo, Kian, Lilah, Bryn, Julian, Hamish, Teddy, Finn, Jasper, Hugo, Reuben, Maiten, Jade and Indigo, with most being selected. Below are some thoughts and reflections from some of the participants.

In August some Year 5 and 6 students participated in the Winder Gala Day trials. Only a few were selected. There were students from other schools. At the trials we did some drills then did a game. After the game the coaches chose the people who were the best in the game and they were going to be in the team. We found out on the day, we didn’t have to wait. The carnival was on the 20 August. Football at the oval at Cadburys. We won, so it is exciting afterwards. George

We went to the hockey centre, there were a lot of people there. There were people from the Tasmanian or Australian team who had just come back from Canberra. We took shots on goals, had to do running to see how much stamina we had, then we played a game – there four teams. Hockey was at the Hockey Centre. I felt a bit nervous but it was fun. Florence

For AFLW – the trials were on the other side of the river. We split into groups and did a bit of training. We were put into teams and played games. We were assessed on how well we played. Then we got told if we got in, the people who were in went on the day to the carnival. We played six games, we played every other team, some played each other twice. Out team came first. The team was called the Tigers. Eleanor

Soccer girls trials were at Lansdowne Crescent Primary School, there were three or four different schools trying out. We did some drills and played some games. A couple of days later we found out if we got in. All the girls got in, same with the boys. On the day we played at Wentworth Park. We played different regions from around Hobart. Our team won all five games that we played. Issy

We went to the netball centre at Creek Road for the trials. We went in and did some stretching then we got put into teams. We did loads of rounds of games, at the end they told us who go in, most of us got in. On game day we went to the same place, we had our coloured shirts, we were the Blue Wrens. We basically had rounds against all the teams, we won a few. We were alright, but we didn’t win. Jade

We (boys soccer) had trials at the same time and at the same place as the girls. There was a rep from Hobart City to scout for players for this carnival. I tried out as a goalkeeper, me and Jasper were the only goalkeepers. I went well at the first trial, they made two teams, an A team and a B team. Most of SH were in the B team. I ended up on the A team. On the day we played five games and won every single one. Finn

For tennis there weren’t any trials or training, you arrive at the Domain Tennis Centre to the club house. Then we went outside to do some warmups, you got a partner to sit with the whole day, mine was Ollie E. Then we did games, basically three rounds, one team had a bye each time. The first round there were five games. Our school got put together with another school. That was our team for the day. The school won all our games in the first round, but I don’t know about the other school. You could take your lunch or pay for it there. We played, maybe fourteen games in the day. At the end of the day we came third. Zac

Thank you again to Banjo’s Hobart for supplying bread for breakfast club every Monday morning this term. The school community enjoys this start to the school week with a piece of hot toast.
