Dear Families
I hope you are enjoying Arts Week! Thank you to families who have been able to attend our performances and view our art exhibitions.
You may have noticed the new notice board by the music room. This is a student notice board and was an initiative of the Year 6 Community Leadership group. They approached the School Association and requested financial support to purchase and install the board. Many thanks to the SA for supporting students’ ideas and plans.
Congratulations to Eleanor and Manon (Year 6) who attended the Children’s Mayor morning tea a couple of weeks ago. At the morning tea they shared their proposal for their plan they would implement if they were mayor for the day. Mrs Klonaris accompanied Eleanor and Manon and said they were very articulate and presented their manifestos with confidence. Well done, Manon and Eleanor!
Regards
Anne Reeves

Arts Week
What a wonderful Arts Week we are having! We had two amazing music performances on Tuesday and Wednesday, a fantastic Kinder and Grade 1 show this morning, and our first performing arts show this afternoon. (Second one is on tomorrow at 9:15am in the hall.)
Congratulations to all of our students for their performances – you are incredible!
I have felt so proud of them for their work on their Arts Week performances. Some students are in their element and revelling in it, while others are really stepping outside their comfort zone. Whatever their starting point, it is so rewarding to see their confidence grow to perform in front of an audience. Students have supported each other and have shown wonderful creativity and camaraderie.
Many thanks to Mr Eddleston and Mrs Wallace for working with students to develop their items. Please remember also the visual art that is on display in the hall and in the main corridor. This will remain on display after Arts Week in the event you have been unable to see it this week. Thank you to Ms Gisborne for working with students on their art pieces.
In Term 3 and 4 we have been studying the Australian Gold Rushes. We started by discovering the origin and then found some fun facts like studying the licence and the Welcome Nugget (The largest gold nugget found in Australia. It was 68.98 kilograms and was found by Richard Jeffery. We have made a model of the gold fields and made little miners. To go with them we have written mystery stories and now we are making stop go animations of our stories. (Stop- go animations are a photographic way to make a short movie with clay and small objects) We also make doll miners out of old and new materials so we got a sense of what they wore. We all really enjoyed this project. Now for a fun fact . . .
The discovery of gold was announced in the Sydney papers on the 14th of May 1851. That is Bobby Darin’s birthday.

The Missing Tools
Crack! Crack! I see a human like shadow pass my tent. I freeze in place, a shiver running down my spine. I feel like my life is about to end. I see the shadow stop in their tracks they freeze right outside my tent door then… Bang! I turn in the direction of the noise and when I look back the shadow was gone.
I woke up feeling like I had slept in a ditch – which was an improvement. The last few days had been a complete nightmare because already twice this week my tools had gone missing. Some people said I had just lost them while I was digging, but I do not think the random visits during the night were just a coincidence.
I walked over and said good morning to the cook. He looked like he had been walking around like a zombie all night. I peered into his pot and saw what looked like a stew that a little kid would make in their back garden with dirt and moss as the ingredients. I realized the cook was staring at me. “What happened this time,” I said with a sigh. “I may have told my friend I would find his boot but you know how bad I am at finding things so I was wondering if maybe you could find it?” You see the cook was always asking me to solve mysteries because apparently, I was the gold field detective. “No, I have my own mystery to solve,” and with that I walked off.
I walked over to where I was mining. I rummaged around in my bag, there was no tools in there again! “Argh, are you serious” I cursed. I decided that this was getting old. I marched back over to our tent and looked around; I knew there must be clues to who is visiting me during the night. I rummaged around in a bush until I felt a piece of leather. I pulled it out and saw that it was the cook’s friend’s boot. I gasped; she must be stealing my tools! I raced back down the hill to where the cook was miserably stirring his disgusting soup. “Where… puff… is…puff…your friend,” I said between gasps of breath. “She is just over there; did you find her boot?” He said hopefully. But instead of answering I ran towards his friend as mad as I would ever be.
When I got to her, I strangled her against a tree. “Why are you stealing our tools?!” I yelled. She looked at me blankly, but I was not buying it. “Come on just tell me,” I yelled again. She finally realised what I was saying and started doing these weird signs at me. A person came up behind her and said “Sorry she does sign language do you want me to translate? Oh yeah and maybe stop strangling her. I reluctantly put her down and the translator started talking, “so she was saying that she did not steal any tools, and she didn’t even know that your tools were missing” I decided to believe her, but I still wanted to ask her a question. “So, do you know anyone who might have stolen my tools” I said as clearly as I could so she could lip read. “Well, she reckons it could be the cook because he seemed quite desperate to get gold” the translator said. I gasped, grabbed her arm, and ran towards the cook.
She looked at me confused as we hid behind a tree. I ignored her and tried to focus. It all had clicked so fast that even I could not keep up with myself. When I said good morning to the cook, he must have nicked the rest of our tools. And he must have put his friends boot in the bush for a fake mystery to distract me from finding my tools. He might even be doing something to our tent right now. But the only thing that did not click is why he would do that to me. We were such good friends with him, and I had not even told him that I had found a tiny bit of gold, no one was around when I had found it.
Then suddenly a loud sound broke me out of my thought.
Bang! Bash! I see the cook leaping out from inside my tent, an empty lamp in his hand. Suddenly… Boosh! My whole tent set ablaze, fire licking up at the sky. I could not wait any longer, so I told the girl my plan. “First, I want you to distract the cook with your sign language while I put the fire out. Then when you think he is about to leave, wave at me then I will grab him.” The girl nods slowly and runs in the direction of the cook. I grab the nearest bucket that was not burning to a crisp and ran towards a small river. Time passed so quickly that before I knew it the tent was laying on the ground drenched. I turn towards the girl just in time to see her wave. I wrestle him to the ground, fuming. I am not that strong, but I felt like I was as strong as an Irish red deer. I pull him up from the ground and walk down the hill in search of the native police.
The news has spread that the cook was hanged, but I know what really happened. The cook was sent to court and got put in prison for theft and is going to be in there for a while. I also found out that he had befriended me so if I found gold he could steal it. He also was spying on me when I had found the gold so that is why he had burnt my tent, he was seeing if the gold would be in the ashes. The new cook makes so much better food then the other one. He does not use me as a detective, but he is not very nice. One time he yelled at someone for putting a dirty dish a meter away from his stew, he said it would infect his stew. The girl that helped me, found gold and became rich, but we send letters every week. I will never forget her help and bravery of that day.
Reports
Well done to all our early childhood students on their efforts at the athletics last week. They did a great job, particularly our Kindergarten students who were participating in their first carnival.
Thank you to our Year 6 leaders who supported the students and helped Mr Nichols in the smooth running of the event. Thanks also to parents who volunteered to take on a role, your help is always very much appreciated.
Congratulations to the parents who participated in the parents’ race. There was so much interest that we had to hold four heats to include everyone!
Our staff and students value your participation and support.
Year 6 Camp 2025 Update
Please see the letter sent home with students today regarding the postponement of the camp.
Volunteers’ Breakfast
As noted last week. This year we are inviting family and community members who have volunteered at school throughout the year to a breakfast. The purpose of the breakfast is for us to say thank you for helping us out and helping us to support student learning.
The breakfast will be on Tuesday 3 December at 8:00am – 9:00am in the hall. You will receive invitations next week. The RSVP is 24 November (for catering purposes).
Toast will be provided for students.
Last week South Hobart Primary School sent a team of chess players to a Chess Tournament hosted by Friends School. We all played a number of games against players from the other schools. We eventually finished 4th. All the students had a very enjoyable day and were pleased with their efforts. A big thank you to Mr. Corney and Mrs. Reeves for accompanying us.
"If any parent would like to volunteer to help at the school triathlon on Friday 29th November can they please contact Jen Macqueen via email ASAP (jennifer.macqueen@yahoo.com.au).
Volunteers must have their WWVP card and have done the mandatory reporting training."
We are coming towards the end of the year and it is customary to have an end of year bbq for the Year 6 leavers and their families. This needs a volunteer to run it. It will only happen if a volunteer puts up their hand. There is already an approved budget. I know there will be a keen bean who would like to take this on. If this is you please send an email to sohoparents@gmail.com
South Hobart Soccer Association

Last week we found out Jack has been selected to travel to England to train with the West Ham Football Club (an English Premier League club). Earlier this year he attended a two day camp here in Hobart and from there was selected to travel to the Gold Coast to participate in the Australian National Camp. Jack has now been selected to be part of a small contingent to go to England in 2025. During the trip he will train with the West Ham Academy and play games with peers over there, as well as attend a few big games and tour stadiums in London and Manchester. Jack has worked hard to develop his skills and his game and we're super proud of this next step he has the opportunity to take.

Metro Bus Announcement
The Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) has notified Metro that its members will be undertaking Protected Industrial Action (PIA) tomorrow, Friday 8 November, between 11:30am and 1:30pm. This is expected to cause significant disruptions across Metro’s Greater Hobart Network between 10:00am and 2:30pm.
However, Metro has prioritised school bus services and general access services that connect with school buses, and we do not anticipate any impact on your students' regular school bus services.
We would appreciate it if you could use your communication channels to reassure parents that school bus services will not be affected by tomorrow’s PIA.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
