Dear Families,
Arts Week is fast approaching!
This week Mr Eddleston and Mrs Wallace combined the classes into their casts for our first ‘run through’ for the Arts Week performances. Students were amazing and very respectful throughout the process of working out placement on the stage, movement of people and movement of instruments.
Teachers and students are working very hard to produce our wonderful show for you.
We are really looking forward to sharing this with you in Arts Week in week 8. Please see the item later in the newsletter for more information.
Last week I spent some time in Kinder and sat with some students and we all drew a Yellow Wattle Bird using the specimen from TMAG. We had interesting conversations about what we could see from our perspective around the table, sizes, shapes and colours. Keep your eyes out for the wonderful artwork being produced by our Kinder students!
Regards
Anne Reeves
Principal

SUSHI VOLUNTEERS
Are you able to help out for 1.5 hours on a Friday once per term for sushi? Sushi Fridays are your School Association’s biggest fundraiser and rely on parent volunteers to pack sushi to go ready to the classrooms. We need more volunteers for Term 4, so please email sohoparents@gmail.com to express your interest. Your contribution is so valuable and appreciated!
SUSHI PRICE INCREASE
Unfortunately as with so many things in life, the price of sushi has gone up from our supplier. The School Association absorbed the last price increase so we need to pass this one on to the retail price of sushi from September. We would like to express our thanks to parents for continuing to support the sushi program as it raises funds for all sorts of school experiences and supplies. Soho on Stage, the School Disco, Ride the Rivulet, the Colour Run… the list goes on !
UPDATE FROM YOUR SCHOOL ASSOCIATION
The School Association met in the library last week for a fun and productive discussion over snacks and drinks. On the agenda: sushi; the safe storage of bbq gas bottles; staff changes; camp planning and evolving Education Department policies around video platforms and AI. Upcoming Association events were also canvassed including SoHo onstage, the Colour Run and, in the near future, an end of term three sausage sizzle run by year six. We’d love to see more parents at the next meeting for a laugh and a chat about ways we can support our lovely school. All families are members of the Association and are warmly invited to attend each meeting.
Family Satisfaction Survey Reminder
-
Family Satisfaction Surveys are still open. Please take this opportunity to share your thoughts on our school.
Surveys and more information can be accessed via Satisfaction_Survey_Email_Template_Families_2_2_.pdf
The survey is open until 19 September.
Cast 1: PrepA, 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A, 6A, and 6B
Cast 2: PrepB, 1B, 2B, 3B, 3/4A, 4/5A, 5B, and 5/6A
Performance Times:
Cast 1 will perform on Tuesday 9 September at 9:30am and again on Wednesday 10 September at 1:45pm.
Cast 2 will perform on Tuesday 9 September at 1:45pm and again on Wednesday 10 September at 9:30am.
All performances will be in the hall.
Please be seated 10 minutes before the start of each performance.
We have students at our school who for a variety of reasons cannot have their photograph taken.
For this reason families are asked NOT to video or take photos of the Arts Week performances. You are welcome to catch up with your child after the performance and take a photo just of them.
Both I and the families who have this preference thank you for your respect and support.
Three Way Conference Bookings Open
Three Way Conferences:
Open 28/08/2025 3:30pm and Close 11/09/2025 Noon.
Year to Date Attendance is the percentage of students who are present at school, on average, each day.
Attendance Level refers to the percentage of students who attend school 90% or more of all school days, so far this year.
90% attendance = 9 days per fortnight.
268 students in our school are currently attending 9 days or more per fortnight.
Next Thursday 4 September, each student’s individual attendance will be sent home for families.
SOHO Make and Bake’s first sale was a big success with the stall selling out of baked goods and making a profit of $113. Keep an eye out for our next sale which will be advertised in the newsletter.
Thanks for all the support!
Hi, we are the Upper Primary mural option group. We are designing and painting a mural on the wall behind the Blue Court, and we would love some input into the design. We’d like parents, carers, and community members to give us suggestions about what you’d like to see incorporated into the mural. We want the design to reflect the school, the local community, the area we live, and for the design to be a long-lasting legacy.
We’d love it if you could give us input on the animals, local landmarks, native plants or colours that you’d like to see reflected in our mural. We have already had lots of interesting suggestions from the classes, and we can’t wait to hear what the wider community would like to see on our wall.
Please email suggestions to the school via Ms. Jo Gisborne
Thank you for your time and help,
The OPTIONS MURAL GROUP.
4/5A's visit to Festival of Bright Ideas
Please view the 4/5 A Newsletter featuring stories of our excursion to the Festival of Bright Ideas!
Hats!
Just a reminder that as per our Sun Smart Policy, students and staff need to start wearing hats from 1 September while outside playing or learning. That’s this coming Monday! We appreciate it if families can support our sun safety by providing your child with their hat. Our Sun Smart Policy also encourages students to apply sunscreen before leaving home in the morning and re-applying at lunch time. Please supply a small container of sunscreen for your child – clearly labelled with their name. Classes will have generic sunscreen for students’ use. I am extremely grateful for the School Association who provide a hat for all new students to our school, including Kinder students at the start of the year. |
Book Week Parade 2025
This years Book Week parade was the 80th year anniversary for Book Week festivities and the students and staff at South Hobart Primary surely showed they love books. The costumes were amazing providing fiction and non fiction text in costume. Families also joined the parade as did Lady Gowrie. We had over 200 parents attend and the vibe was electric. Thank you to all who came and to the parents, teachers and students who made this an exciting time to celebrate reading and the love of books.
Please scroll through our photos of all the students dressed as their favourite book character. Click on the photo to see it in full.

Now enjoy seeing what our teaching staff chose to dress up in for the parade.

Even some of our parents come along as their favourite character.
Which was your favourite costume?
Our Primary School Swimming Carnival will be held on the Wednesday 3rd of September at Clarence Aquatic Centre.

Relays
We will also have novelty races in the smaller side pool.
Students will need to bring bathers, goggles, towel, plastic bag and any medication needed. We will provide swimming caps although students are welcome to bring their own caps. Students are encouraged to wear house colours.
Mr Nichols
Dear Soccer Family
We are super excited to invite you to our end of year celebration and medal presentations this Saturday from midday.
The medal ceremony will start with a BBQ available from 12, medals and games will follow the BBQ.
Following the medal presentations we will then draw the amazing annual raffle. Our annual raffle is a key part of our soccer calendar. Fundraising allows us to invest in equipment and development. We have huge plans for 2026, including a big push to support participation and development for girls - largely, this is only achievable through fundraising.
You can buy a ticket or five right here. Follow this link to purchase your tickets https://www.raffletix.com.au/shpssoccer
See you Saturday!
Other updates:
- Futsal at Kingborough starts in October, the last day for registration is the 10 October, contact your coach, other parents to organise teams or contact us. Futsal is an amazing training experience and we fully support and encourage participation. We also encourage teams to use our kits, it's great to see the school pride on display.
- If you are not participating in Futsal can we please have the T-shirts handed back. These t-shirts cost $30 and we lose about 20% each year.
- Did you enjoy the Hobart Cup? or heard that others did?, well, on the 1st weekend of November we are looking to take a few teams to a competition in Sorell. The competition has been organised just for schools, and creates a great opportunity for those children playing for clubs to come back to the school and play with their mates. Keep an eye out for emails nearer the time.

I pay respect to the traditional and original owners of this land the muwinina (mou wee nee nar) people, to pay respect to those that have passed before us and to acknowledge today’s Tasmanian Aboriginal people who are the custodians of this land.
Guppies!!
1A has a lot of yellow Guppies in their fishtank as they have been breeding too well.
We have both Females and Males to give away.
Guppies are Tropical Fish so need the correct water temperature of about 25-27 degrees and a stable PH in the water of 6.8-7.
Parents/carers please see Miss Whitmore in room 14 (Garden Rooms).
Nationals Cross Country
On Saturday (23.8.25), I was in Ballarat for the Nationals Cross Country Championships. I was on the state team for Tasmania. My race was the Under-13 girls 3km. It was really flat compared to Tassie, and there were two big, super-muddy mud patches which they had made with dirt and water because there was no mud on the course originally. I had to make sure I tied my shoelaces tightly because people were losing shoes in the mud! It was really hard but so much fun. I came 40th out of 66 people. I did a personal best time. My PB (personal best) for 3km was 12:35 but at Nationals I ran 12:12! I am really proud to have represented Tasmania for a second time at Nationals.
