Dear Families
Congratulations to our school chess team who travelled to Launceston last Monday to participate in the State Chess Championship. They won and came back to school with a very impressive trophy which is currently on display in the front office. Please see their photo in today’s newsletter. Many thanks to Kirsten and Paul for transporting and supervising the students on their triumphant trip north!
Congratulations also to our interschool swimming team who participated in the interschool carnival last week. They acquitted themselves well in the pool and were fabulous sportspeople out of it. Thanks to Mr Nichols, parents who volunteered and families who were able to attend to cheer them on!
Planning for next year is progressing well. Class structures for 2024 will be as follows:
- Kindergarten (x2). Both classes will be operating on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
- Prep (x2)
- Year 1 (x2)
- Year 2 (x2)
- Year 2/3
- Year 3
- Year 3/4
- Year 4 (x2)
- Year 4/5
- Year 5 (x2)
- Year 6 (x2)
Enrolment numbers for next year are decreasing with an expected figure of 449. Our current enrolment is 471. For this reason, we will be reducing to eighteen classes next year, down one from nineteen.
Our Volunteer Afternoon Tea will be held on Wednesday 22 November, after school. As noted in our correspondence list, invitations will be sent out in the next few days. If you have volunteered in any way and do not receive an invitation, this will be an oversight, not a slight! So please get in touch to let us know.
Regards
Anne Reeves

Our invitiations to the Volunteers Afternoon Tea will be going home in the coming days. We hope that you can join us so we can say 'Thank You".
The Schools Triathlon is a major sporting event involving over 120 SHPS students this year. To be able to safely participate we need parents/carers to volunteer to attend the Triathlon and assist our teachers in managing the various aspects of the event.
The Triathlon is being held on 1st of December, with the buses leaving school at 9:00am and returning at 2:50pm. Meeting us at Bellerive at 9:30am is also an option for you.
All volunteers will need a current Working with Vulnerable People card.
If you can give some time to help please email Bec Corney using the link below. The error some of you may have encountered has been rectified.
Thank you.
What's Next?
As we are nearing our time at South Hobart Primary School, we are preparing to pass on all our leadership work, down to the grade 5s. Some projects that we weren't able to complete will be passed on to the next lot of grade sixes. Some of the projects we have completed this year include organizing Dark Soho and raising a profit of $956. 75 for the garden, winning a garden grant from Land Care Australia, ran Toasty Tuesday, organized Harmony Day activities, organized lunchtime games for younger students, and got the garden up and running by students. We are looking forward to meeting with next year's grade sixes and hearing their ideas for the future.

Inter Schools Swimming Carnival
On the 1st of November, some students from South Hobart Primary, went to the Aquatic centre to compete against other schools in the division A interschool swimming carnival. They arrived at around 10:15 and finished at 1:00 and got back at school at 1:30. The students did very well, and our school came 7th overall.
Finnian came first in 25 metre free style and the 25-metre backstroke.
Shinwoo came first in the 50-metre free style.
By Holly and Isabelle
Editors Note: Other great results include :
Rose came second in the 50m freestyle.
Holly, Forbes and Chanwoo came second in their 25m freestyle races.
Grade 6 boys came second in the freestyle relay and third in the medlay relay.
Grade 3 boys came second in their Freestyle relay.
Thank you to everyone who attended to support us.
On October 31st, 2/3A embarked on a hands-on excursion aboard the Lady Nelson, an extraordinary full-size replica of the original Lady Nelson Brig that brought the first European settlers to Hobart in 1803. This remarkable vessel, constructed locally in 1988, transported our students on an exhilarating voyage at sea.
During this adventure, our students actively participated in various shipboard activities, including raising and lowering the sails, steering the ship, and ringing the bell. Each task was thoughtfully explained as they carried it out. Our students had the opportunity to explore the ship's interior, gaining valuable insight into life below and aboard deck, providing them with a genuine taste of what it was like for those who embarked on the journey from Britain to this distant land many years ago.
It was a welcome reminder that the classroom isn’t the only place where learning takes place, and that sometimes the most memorable learning happens elsewhere, in real-life settings.
Excursion Report 3A
On Tuesday 31st of October, 3A and volunteers went on an excursion to Sullivan’s Cove Foreshore. As part of our HASS studies, we were investigating the change of Sullivan’s Cove Foreshore from 1804 until present. Mr Harrison volunteered to come with us, and he showed us things on the way and taught us about the history of the Rivulet and the Foreshore.
We had fruit break at the Hunter Island Monument, recess at Salamanca Square, and lunch at Parliament Lawn.
After lunch we went to the docks and met the crew of the Lady Nelson. After a safety briefing, we were welcomed aboard. We were given jobs like, putting the sails down and up, steering the ship and ringing the bell. We got to look down below the deck and see where the crew slept, cooked, and ate. We saw a shadow in the water, we thought it might have been a tiger shark or dugong.
We caught the bus back to school, and we were very tired as we walked over eleven thousand steps!
A special thanks to Jen Macqueen, Rachel Yanqiu, and Mr. Harrison for giving up their time to help us on our excursion.

Our Excursion
By Leni, Mimi and Stella (3B)
On the 31st of October, we had an excursion on the Lady Nelson, a replica of one of the first ships that came into Tasmania in 1804. At 11am we boarded the Lady Nelson and gave our bags to the crew. It was very crazy after that. We pulled up the sails while it was raining! It was starting to get cold and wet on the deck so we got to go and climb down into the cabin. It was amazing seeing the bunks, the kitchen and the bathroom which even had a shower. The table was squished in the corner so the kitchen could fit! After about 15 minutes, it stopped raining and the captain said we could steer the ship! It was sooo fun! At about 11:30 we rang the bell at the front of the ship by pulling the rope inside towards you. As we travelled over the rough ocean, we saw the amazing view of the city.
The State Chess School Championships
On Monday the 29th of October, the Chess club arrived at Launceston at 10am for the State Chess School Championships. There were nineteen other schools competing from around the state. They played nine matches each, and won best in state, before being invited to Adelaide for Nationals. They received a large trophy and to quote Paddy, “we filled it to overflowing with Halloween chocolate”

Fern Tree Fire Brigade would like to let you know that your local fire station is having an open day for the general public to come and have a look round the station and get information on fire safety in the home and bushfire planning / preparedness.
- There will be opportunities for kids (and big kids) to have a look at all the gear in the trucks and sit in them. The truck tours will be run by our Junior Brigade (a lot of whom are, or have been, South Hobart Primary students). The Junior brigade will also be doing hose drill demos. We will have a fire hose set up for kids to have a go at hitting our target flames.
- There will be a live fire demo on how to use fire extinguishers and fire blankets.
- We will have Fire brigade members getting into Breathing apparatus (BA). It is really valuable for the kids to know that under all that gear is a regular person, so in the unfortunate event they do have someone in BA to come and rescue them they are not petrified. Most kids in this situation hide, which makes rescue slower and harder for crews.
The TFS has a public education and awareness responsibility, it would be great to see as many people swing by the station as possible. This coming fire season is looking like a serious one, so getting information on bushfire preparation to the public is a priority for us.
The open day runs from 10am until 3pm on Sunday 12th November.

It’s that time of the year again, our students are super excited to present our 2023 Production……..
Taroona High School’s production of Crazy for You (Gershwin)
About the Show
Theatre-mad Bobby Child is torn between his show-business dreams and running the family bank. He reluctantly heads west to Deadrock, Nevada, to foreclose on a theatre’s mortgage, only to fall for the theatre owner’s daughter, Polly. Desperate to prove his good faith, Bobby decides to put on a show – complete with dancers from the glamorous Zangler Follies in New York City – to save the theatre, renew the town and hopefully win Polly’s love. With a riotously entertaining book by Ken Ludwig and overflowing with glorious Gershwin melodies (including Someone to Watch Over Me, I Got Rhythm and They Can’t Take That Away from Me), this large-scale production boasts a 30 piece orchestra and an incredible 34 strong cast.
This year’s production will highlight the work of over 100 talented students from Drama, Music, Event Production, and MDT classes. The success of the 2023 Whole School Production involves the support of students, staff, and parents of the wider Taroona High School community.
