Dear Families
It has been great to return to routine after two weeks of the Swimming and Water Safety Program.
On Tuesday we had a very productive School Association with our new committee. I look forward to working with the committee and other parents who attend meetings. All families of enrolled students are eligible to attend committee meetings. The next meeting is on Tuesday 25 June, 6:30pm for a 7:00pm start. Please come along and connect with other parents and learn more about our school.
Next week our school is participating in Instructional Rounds. This involves some teachers and students from our school and some teachers and leaders from other schools working together to gather information about our practices. They will work in groups to visit classrooms and observe and speak with students. Towards the end of the day participants will gather together to synthesise their findings and make recommendations. The most exciting aspect of this is the involvement of our students! Our focus is student agency in their learning.
Please keep an eye on the newsletter for more information about our findings.
One Week to Go!
Bookings for Three Way Conferences have been open for a week, one more to go! Three Way Conferences are a dedicated time for students, teachers and families to sit down together and share the student’s learning. The conference is led by the student who will share their learning goals and some of their learning artefacts. If you need to speak to the teacher about other issues, please make another time for this. It is important that all students have an opportunity to share their learning with their families in this forum.
Three Way Conferences in term two are for Year 1 – 6 students, Kinder and Prep have meetings between parents and teachers only. Kinder and Prep students do NOT attend the term two conferences.
Some key points:
- Appointments are 15 minutes long. The bookings will show as meetings being 20 minutes apart.
- There is a 5-minute buffer between appointments to allow families to move around the school and for teachers to prepare for each meeting.
- Bookings open on Thursday 16 May 2024.
- Bookings close on Thursday 30 May 2024 at 12:00pm.
- Families who have not made a booking within this two-week window will need to make a time directly with the teacher.
- Kindergarten and Prep – meetings are between teachers and parents only.
- Year 1 – 6 – meetings involve the student, parents and teacher.

Adaptations Inquiry
Our inquiry projects have been exploring the different types of adaptations plant and animals use to survive. We looked at the physical, behavioural, and structural adaptations. We researched the meaning of these adaptations and then created imaginary animals and plants to survive on a fictional island. Please enjoy reading about some of these animals below.
Camouflage Art
As part of exploring different types of adaptations, we looked at animals that use camouflage to hide themselves.
To create our artwork, we cut out butterflies and stuck them against an interesting background. We drew and coloured the butterflies to blend them into the background and make them disappear.
Can you find the butterflies in the artwork below?
This is a reminder that we have our first sharing assemblies next week. All the classes will be sharing with their buddy class over three assemblies. Students will be showing finished work as well as some examples of their work displaying their thinking and understanding of the task at hand.

ICAS COMPETITIONS 2024 - Year 3 to 6 Students
Dear Parent / Guardian
We are pleased to run the online ICAS competitions this year in August (Term 3). These are external online educational assessments and are run in partnership with Sydney University. The registrations and payments are organised by ICAS Assessments, while the school provides the venue and test supervision. If you would like more information, please visit: https://www.icasassessments.com
Please note, that the decision to enrol a student in one or more of these assessments is solely the decision of parents/carers and we cannot recommend the decision to sit an assessment. Parents are welcome to purchase past papers through the ICAS website.
The registrations for the ICAS competitions are now open. ICAS request that parents do not enrol their child at a higher grade level, which is checked with the school before the assessment.
Payments and registrations for the assessments are made directly to ICAS Assessments by parents through the online school code provided below. Payments can be made directly through the portal at any time until 3pm on Friday 5th July (last day of Term 2). The parent payment portal will then be closed. Students may sit any or all of the assessments.
URL: https://shop.icasassessments.com/pages/pps with the School Access Code: GAH709
Please take special note of the deadline for payment as this cannot be extended and the school is unable to register students on your behalf. All assessments will be undertaken at school between 9:00 am and 11:00 am. The assessments are conducted online using our school computers.
Please contact me if you have any queries via email: helen.rothwell@decyp.tas.gov.au
Yours sincerely

On Friday 10 May 2024 we went to the State Athletics Carnival in Launceston, we were super nervous until we did the races, because the races were fun! We had to get up early, some of us got up at 5:30am! We had to be there by a quarter to ten. Amelie and Grace went up the night before.
When asked what the trip was like, Amelie, Grace, Florence, Ruby and Matthew said – long! Hours!
Mrs Reeves asked what happens if you win races, Ruby said you feel good! There might be something in Canberra, or Adelaide – the nationals! We all agreed we need to find out more about that.
They were all tired when they finished. At the end when we were leaving there was a thunderstorm and the cars got jammed.
Some comments from the athletes:
Amelie – I did the long jump, you run and jump. Grace and Amelie ran the 100m together. Florence was there when I started and she helped me do warm ups. I did the 800m and shot put.
Ruby – It was really fun that our Southern team, whenever we ran a race ran over and said yay! The races were fun, the 400m was definitely my favourite. We were all pretty nervous when we got there.
Matthew – I liked the relay. I did the 400 and 200. I won the 400 and 200 and my relay team won too. I did the 100m, I came second and fourth (heats and final).
Grace – everyone was really supportive, including Miss Bushby. I thought I was just going to do the 800m, but when I got there I was supposed to do the 1500 as well and I came third in both. I buddied with Amelie. I was extremely exhausted at the end! I got my PB in the 800, I’m not sure about the 1500m.
Florence – My favourite part about the carnival was running my 100m and getting my PB. I found doing the relay really hard. I kept getting my hand in the way when she grabbed the baton. I ended up running my 200 in my PB and ended up coming third.
Congratulations to our five students for their efforts at the State Championships!
Thank you to the people who made it into the interschool and Champions. Thank you to the adults who helped, including Mr Nichols. Thanks parents for taking us to Launceston.
