Student Free Day Tomorrow/Public Holiday
Reminder
Tomorrow, 7th of June, is a student free day in order for all the teachers to attend State wide Moderation meetings.
The following Monday, 10th of June, is the King's Birthday Public Holiday.
Dear Families
Recently we have seen some student activity supporting our School Improvement Plan and goals.
Two weeks ago, the SRC commenced as a group. Representatives are from Years 2 – 5, with the Year 6 students having their own leadership opportunities. We meet each week on Mondays from 12:50pm – 1:20pm.
The purpose of the SRC is to give students some say in what happens around the school, to be a consultative body to the leadership team and to develop connections across the school.
Please keep watch on our SRC Updates section in the newsletter each fortnight.
Last Thursday and Friday a group of Year 5 students participated in Instructional Rounds. They worked with leaders and teachers from other schools around our problem of practice which is: Teachers at SHPS believe that student agency is important, but preliminary data suggests that students believe they have little agency in their learning. What does student agency currently look like at SHPS?
At the end of the second day, each group, including the students, made recommendations to the school about actions we can take to increase student agency. Unfortunately, I was unwell and unable to attend the sessions, so I will share more when I have met with teachers and students who attended, met with Greg Mitchell who facilitated the sessions and read through the huge amount of material generated throughout the two days.
Student agency is part of our School Improvement Plan (SIP) in the area of student engagement. I will be sharing the SIP at the next School Association meeting. (Tuesday 25 June, 6:30pm for a 7:00pm start, in the Library)

SRC Updates
In the interests of sustainability and looking after our planet, you will see the SRC reps wearing beautiful, red polar fleece jackets. These were purchased some years ago for the choir and are no longer used. The SRC are re-using and repurposing these to show their membership to this student group.
The reps have four main tasks to start our work:
- Develop a suggestion box and talk to their teacher about a time to report back from SRC meetings.
- Consider the term SRC (student representative council) – is this what we want our group to be called?
- A working group has commenced work on a Welcome to Winter – Oodie and Uggs Day.
- Another working group is planning a school disco for Thursday 4 July.
What it is like to be in the SRC.
Hi, my name is Yana. I am in the SRC. The SRC can sometimes be a bit challenging, but I still like it a lot. I think it is nice to have Grade 2 people because normally people younger than 9 years old never really get to do anything fun.
Normally you miss some of your lunch. But I do not care because being the SRC is much more fun than playing in the playground.
I think it is nice to let people know what I would like the school to be like. It is nice to be able to do something for the school. The SRC is sooo fun!
P.S. we are not giving you our autograph!
My name is Peta. I am in the SRC. The SRC can be challenging at times, but we get through. I like the SRC because it is a good opportunity to meet new people.
The SRC is fun because we get to do lots of jobs around the school. It is nice that the Year 2 people get to go in the SRC. But I do miss a lot of play, but I don’t care. I like to ask people what they would like for the school.
"I like SRC because we get to organise fun things for the school. We’re organising a disco, it’s going to be in week 10. We have red jumpers because we are in SRC. The jumpers are cool." Austin
INTER SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
On Tuesday South Hobart Primary School’s cross-country team went to inter school cross country at Bayview Secondary College where we got first against 19 other schools.
At the end of the day, we had more than five banners. This was the best position we ever got in division A.
We all had a great day running and cheering on our school. The course was very rough and rutted with small hills. We were expecting wet and cold day but instead it was a sunny day and not raining.
But most of all we thank Mr Nicols for training us and getting us ready to run.
Oliver and George – 4/5A
Congratulations to our cross-country team who competed in the Interschool Cross Country event on Tuesday. Not only were they amazing sportspeople and representatives of our school, they also won! To come first in division 1 is a wonderful achievement! Well done to all members of the team.

In Performing Arts, the Prep-2 classes are working on story-based Drama. We read a picture book and then talk about the themes of the book and how we might create drama from those themes. We do lots of brainstorming of our ideas and then we have an opportunity to perform at the end of the lesson. We also create tableaus of the books. This is using our bodies to create a frozen picture.
The 3-6 students are further developing their skills in improvisation. We do lots of activities which encourage us to use our imagination and to increase our confidence. We have also been working on a devised script where we interview inanimate objects. The focus has been on us being able to sustain a character and to project our voices. We are being encouraged to perform our 'interviews' to our class.

Introducing Ladybug
Dramatic play is an important aspect of our play based learning program in Kindergarten. In dramatic play we get to wonder, discover and explore, it provides many learning opportunities including socialising, role play and developing cooperative skills, to name a few.
We were extremely fortunate to have a beautiful boat by the name of “Ladybug” donated to us by Joe. The children are thoroughly enjoying having “Ladybug” in our playground.
Instructional Rounds - Student Report
Last week, a few students in grade 5 did the instructional rounds. Our school’s problem of practice* was Student Agency. Student agency it is the content that you choose to learn, the way you learn and who you want to learn with. We gathered on the Thursday afternoon to produce our own definition of student agency. Here is what we came up with:
Student Agency requires students to know themselves just as teachers need to know their students to support growth. They need to know the why and the what and contribute to the how to make learning real and relevant, transforming the curriculum.
Students with agenda can set goals and reflect on their learning. Agency in school leads to agency in life.
We are all a team in our learning.
On the Friday we visited classrooms to collect data about students, teachers and classroom environment. We sorted through the data and made some discoveries about our school.
We made recommendations to the school to improve student agency.
Then we made a newsletter item to tell you about it.
By Josh, Florence, Theo, Matilda, George, Zoe, Ollie, Levi, Kili and others.
*Problem of Practice – something that the school had identified through data and other information that it needs to improve or get better at.
A final word from our students:
Florence thought “it was lots of fun getting to work with other people.”
George – “I thought it was really nice to meet new people.”
Theo liked going into classrooms to interview students, it was interesting and fun.
Josh – “it was nice to hear other people’s thoughts.”
I thought the free food was really good. George
I asked the students, “What was it like working with teachers and principals from other schools?”:
- Awkward at first, but once you realised their personality it becomes a little less scary.
- Bit awkward, but then you sort of got used to it, they were really nice, but they were concentrating on their work.
- “It’s really weird seeing teachers put their hands up, it’s a laughing matter . . .” – Josh

ICAS COMPETITIONS 2024 - Year 3 to 6 Students
Dear Parent / Guardian
We are pleased to run the online ICAS competitions this year in August (Term 3). These are external online educational assessments and are run in partnership with Sydney University. The registrations and payments are organised by ICAS Assessments, while the school provides the venue and test supervision. If you would like more information, please visit: https://www.icasassessments.com
Please note, that the decision to enrol a student in one or more of these assessments is solely the decision of parents/carers and we cannot recommend the decision to sit an assessment. Parents are welcome to purchase past papers through the ICAS website.
The registrations for the ICAS competitions are now open. ICAS request that parents do not enrol their child at a higher grade level, which is checked with the school before the assessment.
Payments and registrations for the assessments are made directly to ICAS Assessments by parents through the online school code provided below. Payments can be made directly through the portal at any time until 3pm on Friday 5th July (last day of Term 2). The parent payment portal will then be closed. Students may sit any or all of the assessments.
URL: https://shop.icasassessments.com/pages/pps with the School Access Code: GAH709
Please take special note of the deadline for payment as this cannot be extended and the school is unable to register students on your behalf. All assessments will be undertaken at school between 9:00 am and 11:00 am. The assessments are conducted online using our school computers.
