Dear Families
Several classes have enjoyed learning in varied settings over the past week with 1A, 1B, 1/2A and 2A visiting Woodbridge Marine Discovery Centre and 5A and 5B visiting the Penitentiary in Campbell Street. I hope you enjoy reading about 1A’s learning from there. Other classes will feature in later newsletters. Prep A and Prep B also visited Woodbridge at the end of term two, and have shared some of their thinking in today's newsletter.
Planning for 2024 has commenced, though it is hard to believe that it is that time of year again! If your child will not be attending South Hobart Primary School next year could you please advise me as soon as possible. Having this information greatly helps the development of classes and planning for staffing. Similarly, if you know of families in our intake area who may be attending next year, please encourage them to contact admin.
Some processes about planning classes for next year that you may wish to know about. Later in term three students will provide feedback to their teachers about people they would like to be with in class next year. Teachers compile groups of students who will move together into the 2024 class group. Students will revisit the information they provided to their teachers in the first few weeks of term four. Teachers and the leadership team use this information to compile classes.
I will ask for parent information regarding classes in week 8 of this term, with a closing date of the 29 September, the last day of term.
Regards
Anne Reeves
Principal
Bus Lists - Routes 288 and 270
We have bus processes in place to maintain student safety.
If your child’s bus arrangements are changing long-term, could you please notify admin via SZapp so that the change can be made to the list, this includes if you are taking extended holidays.
If your child’s bus arrangements change on a day-to-day basis, could you please notify the office as early as possible, but by 2:30pm at the latest. Admin needs time to write messages and affix to tubs, which are then collected at 2:50pm each day.
Our process at the bus lines is: check students off in the bus line, stand at the door of the bus and check off again as they board the bus. Sometimes students are on the list as being ‘on the bus’, but are not in the bus line or not on the list, but present in the line. If this occurs, we; look for them, make PA announcements, contact class teachers and/or phone home. Some afternoons we make up to six phone calls to families to check where students should be. Unfortunately, this causes the buses to run late.
I thank you in advance for your cooperation in keeping our students safe.
Collecting Students During the Day
School staff understand that sometimes appointments can only be sourced during the school day. If you need to collect your child for an appointment could you please let their class teacher and/or admin know so that you child can be prepared when you come to collect them.
If you need to pick your child up during recess or lunch times (11:00am – 11:30am and 12:50pm – 1:40pm) please collect them at the start of the break, as it is really difficult to contact students in the playground during recess and lunch times. This will help us help you to be on time! Thank you for your cooperation.
If your child(ren) are taking an extended absence could you please notify me that this is occurring and the dates of travel. This helps us keep accurate attendance records and avoids unnecessary phone calls to you to ascertain your child’s whereabouts.
Family holidays are considered an unauthorised absence under the Education Act. Please contact me here at school if you require further information.

Arts Week
Planning for arts week continues with some exciting events coming up. Every student will have a piece of art exhibited and every class will perform either a musical item or a drama piece. Some classes are also working with their class teachers for an additional performance.
We also have some artists who will be visiting the school and working with students – more information to come in the next newsletter on the 17 August!
The Year 5 and 6 bands will perform on Friday 1 September after lunch, culminating in a surprise before bell time!
On Friday lunch time students, staff and parents are invited to register for a place to do some busking under the gazebo. This is intended to be a casual affair with each performer having a small amount of time to perform (depending on the number of performers), who knows, some may even receive an encore! So, families, dust off your musical instruments, warm up your vocal cords, limber up for juggling, dancing or balancing! if you are interested in busking please contact me as soon as possible on anne.reeves@decyp.tas.gov.au.

Do you have a child turning 5 years old in 2024?
Do you live in the South Hobart Primary School catchment area or already have an older student enrolled at SHPS?
If so, now is the time to enroll your child for school next year and start attending our Pre Kinder sessions. Our fun filled sessions are held every Friday (school days only) between 9am and 10:30. Come along and meet the Kinder staff and your childs future classmates as well as becoming familiar with their new classrooms.
If you know of someone in the community with a Pre Kinder age child, and you don't believe they have seen this information, please pass this on to them, so they can begin to enjoy Pre Kinder sessions with other children.
Enrollment forms are available at the main office. These need to be returned to the office with any required documentation before prospective students can attend any Pre Kinder sessions.
There will be a Kinder 2024 parent meeting on Thursday 14 September. The Kinder teachers will provide information about the Kinder learning program and how you can support your child to be ready for school in February. There is also ample opportunity for questions. The meeting is for parents of enrolled 2024 Kinder students.
During September families will be asked for day preferences with confirmation provided to you by the end of term three.
We look forward to meeting you very soon.
On Monday the 5th of June, Prep A and Prep B went to the Marine Discovery Centre in Woodbridge. The excursion was an exciting and informative learning experience for all involved. We learnt all about living things and how they can be grouped based on their external features. Some of the highlights were the touch tank room, feeding the skates and shark and building our own aquariums. Here is what some of the students from Prep A had to say about their day:
- I liked the crabs – David
- My favourite thing was patting the shark and I learnt to be careful around the animals – Ruby
- My favourite thing was patting the skate – Ewan
- I loved looking at the sea cucumbers – Sissi
- I loved the touch tank room, I really liked picking up the hermit crabs and sea cucumbers. I learnt that some octopus hide in shells – Vera
- My favourite thing was the shark because it looked cool – Sofia
- I liked when we fed the shark with fish on poles – Tawhiri
- My favourite thing at the Marine Discovery Centre was holding the sea cucumber. I also got to listen to the snapping shrimp under the water, I didn’t know they made a crackling sound! – Emina
- I loved holding the sea cucumbers! – Kalia
- I got to pick up a hermit crab and I learnt that octopus can hide in small places like shells – Vivienne
- My favourite thing was patting and feeding the shark – Porter
- I liked feeding the skates. I found out that puffer fish only need shallow water to swim in – Ada
In Term 3 the Grade 6’s will be running Toastie Tuesday at lunch time. The flavour options are:
Cheese toasties for $2.50
Ham and Cheese toasties for $3.50
Toasties are limited to the first 100 orders and will be delivered to classrooms. Order by 9am Thursday the week before through Qkr!
On Friday the 30th of June both Prep classes ventured to the bank of the Rivulet and planted a tree and some surrounding shrubs. With some help from Hobart City Council and the organisation of Megan Ransome, members of both prep classes from Mrs. Ransome’s kinder class in 2022, were able to turn their idea into reality.
We planted a strapping young white gum on the banks of the Hobart Rivulet, just upstream from the school grounds. White gums are important habitat trees in many parts of Tasmania, and down on the rivulet this specimen could grow up to 40 metres tall.
Its roots will help stabilise the rivulet bank and its growing limbs and spreading leaves will shade the rivulet in summer, keeping water temperatures down for the platypus and other aquatic wildlife.
The white gum will also produce plenty of "lerps and manna", sugary treats that provide food for birds and insects.
We hope that for many years to come the school and wider community will enjoy our very special tree.

1A Excursion to the Marine Discovery Centre:
Yesterday my class went to the Marine Discovery Centre. We went on a big bus trip. Firstly, we had recess and then we went to our classroom for the day. In the classroom there were 3 tasks. One was making dioramas one was spotting animals and one was making glow in the dark animals. Then we had lunch. We went to the touch pool and we patted sharks and skates. We fed the fish but no fish ate my fish so I had to release my fish.
Willem
My favourite part was touching the shark and the skate. I was very scared of touching the sea cucumber and I was very happy when I was touching the star fish. It was so much fun. I also loved feeding the fish. I got to feed three fish.
Amelie
We went to the Marine Discovery Centre but firstly we went on the bus. Next we had recess and then we went to the classroom and made a glow in the dark picture. There were glow in the dark stickers. You shine a light on them and make them glow. After lunch we got to hold the sea animals and we got to feed the fish. A puffer fish got mine. Then the bus came and we went back to school.
Chloe

The excitement continues!
Book Week for this year will be celebrated between 19th – 25th of August. Along with various events during the week, we will hold our BIG Book Week Parade on Thursday 24 August at 9:15am. Families are warmly invited to attend and to join with us dressed as a character from one of your favourite books! Don't forget to bring the book with you from which your character is featured in.

School Crossing Etiquette
1. Please hop off bikes and scooters before crossing - it is safer for you and for others.
2. Please hold onto all balls while crossing - in case they get away from you.
3. Please wait until I say to cross - as some cars don’t always see the sign and may not stop, I also like to let large trucks and bikes pass before crossing.
4. If I have my hand up palm facing you, please wait as I will be letting a few cars go through before next crossing.
5. You may be in a hurry, but you don’t have to run across the street
6. I am there to help you cross the street, no matter your age or if you are a student. (People Crossing not just children)
7. I am happy for you to talk to me, although I will apologise in advance as I won’t remember everyone’s name
8. For those driving: remember it is a 40 zone in all school areas
9. Please only park in designated parking areas, it is extremely difficult for the crossing guard to see around vehicles parked in the crossing areas.
10. Thank you for already being great
