Dear Families,
Welcome to winter! We have been treated to an icy, but beautiful, blast this morning. Speaking of cold weather, there are currently 23 polar fleece jackets, 2 soft shell jackets and one coat in lost property. Could families please check that all uniform items are named and that if you have a second-hand item your child’s name replaces that of the previous owner?
At this time of year students also need to bring warm clothing as even a day that starts out mild can change quickly.
Learning continues in classrooms with Year 5 and 6 students well into the swing of their options program. We will be sharing more of this with you in coming newsletters.
Yesterday I spent some time in Kinder and shared in their indoor/outdoor learning program. Some students were outside exploring the environment with a range of activities. Inside, other students were busy exploring provocations, reading, building and sketching the museum exhibit – a white-headed petrel. I was also lucky enough to have an interesting conversation with Ellis about wingspan.
I hope you enjoy reading about Grace’s success in the Organ Pipes Classic event. Please find Grace’s item in this newsletter and read more about it. If your child has experiences in extra-curricular activities that you would like shared in the newsletter, please get in touch.
Regards
Anne Reeves

Three Way Conferences Bookings
Three Way Conferences (3WC)
These will be held in week 5; Monday 26 – Friday 30 May.
Families of Kindergarten and Prep students will have a parent meeting, students do not attend these.
Year 1 – 6 students will have a Three-Way Conference. This is led by the student who will share their learning goals and some of their tasks with their families.
Bookings open tomorrow, Friday 9 May at 12:00pm.
Bookings close Friday 23 May at 12:00pm.
After the bookings close, families will need to make bookings directly with the teacher.
Meetings are 15 minutes long. This year we are not having the 5-minute transition time between meetings. If you have more than one child, please consider this when making your booking.
If families are unable to make an appointment for week 5, catch-ups will be offered in week 6 only.
A reminder to parents that when you subscribe to SZapp you need to select your child’s or children’s class(es). This will enable admin to send information just to your child’s class, such as excursion letters or year group, such as Year 6 camp.
A letter has been distributed electronically today to all Year 3 – 6 families with details about the ICAS assessments.
Please note a change from previous years where we will be offering these assessments AFTER school using school computers.
Please check that the dates work for your family’s extra-curricular activities before enrolling.
On Friday 25th April three students from South Hobart Primary School represented the 3rd Australian Light Horse Regiment in this year’s ANZAC Day Parade. It is always a great celebration of our service men, women and animals, as well as commemoration of the sacrifices so many families have made, in both conflict and peace-time operations. Thank you to Lyla, George, and Amelie, and families, for attending and representing the school during the school holidays. It was wonderful to see all the organisations gathered at the Cenotaph enjoying a Milo and Anzac biscuit.
Jo Gisborne
Visual Arts - 2A Teacher
For this year's ANZAC parade we met at St Joseph's Church, where we collected the SHPS banner for the 3rd Australian Light Horse Regiment. Ms. Gisborne gave us our marching positions in front of the horses. As the marching band started we began our walk through the city up to the Cenotaph. Once the parade had finished we gave our respects to those who fought for our country.
We will remember them. Lest we Forget.
I encourage others to do it next year, it's really fun, especially with a friend.
Amelie (5/6)
On the 25th of April three students went to Macquarie Street to commemorate the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli. We were holding a flag to represent The Light Horse Regiment. We walked from the corner of Victoria and Macquarie Street to the Cenotaph. It made me feel proud to be a part of the ANZAC march and to be representing The Light Horse Regiment.

In 2A we have been doing some informative writing about our classmates.
Can you tell who we are writing about?
Please come into the main hallway and have a look at all our pieces of work.
- A firefighter from the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) is visiting our school from the 12-23 May (Term 2) to present a Home Fire Safety Program to our Prep to Grade 6 students.
- Kindergarten students, whilst not receiving a structured lesson, can expect a visit from the firefighter who will leave some free fun activities for the students to complete.
- The age appropriate program is designed to raise fire awareness in children and includes fun in class activities, videos, activity books, giveaways and a new kid’s website www.tfskids.com.au.
- Parents and other family members are also encouraged to participate by reading the information and assisting your child with the after school activities.
- The TFS aims to deliver appropriate fire safety education to every primary school child in Tasmania and is part of the TFS’s ongoing commitment to create a fire safe Tasmania.
EARLY CHILDHOOD
TFS receives regular requests from preschools and child care centres asking for firefighters to visit and teach children about home fire safety.
TFS does not deliver structured fire safety programs to children below primary school age. This decision was made based on research carried out by the Mental Health Services of the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Metropolitan Fire Brigade in Melbourne. This research indicated that:
- Children under the age of five had low retention of the information they had learned; and
- In some children, the information had actually stimulated their curiosity about fire and they had begun to play with fire.
TFS believes that parents and caregivers are the best people to make sure that very young children are safe from fire. To help with this, TFS has a fire safety website for parents, carers and teachers.
TFS has also developed free giveaways for young children that introduce them to the friendly firefighter characters that they will meet when they receive the School Fire Education Program including a colouring book, a money box shaped like a fire truck, and stickers with home fire safety messages for the whole family. Click here for free giveaways for your preschool or child care centre.
Book Club issue #3 went home last week and it’s packed full of awesome books!
Orders close on Monday May 19th.
Happy choosing!
Dear parents and guardians,
Kinder Health checks are underway with South Hobart School Nurse Laura.
If you wish to attend with your child, please use the booking system here: https://sthhobartps.schoolzineplus.com/view-session/26
DO NOT book in if you are not intending to attend with your child. I will screen these children around the families who wish to attend and will ring/write you a letter with the results.
The booking system will close on Thursday 22nd May. If you decide you wish to come outside of this time with your child, please get in touch with me via your class teacher or front office.
Regards,
Laura, School Health Nurse

Student Achievement - Trail Racing
Organ Pipes Classic Trail Running Race
I ran in the Organ Pipes Classic trail race, which is part of the Kunanyi Trail Series. It was my first trail running race, and I didn’t know how well I would do. It went along Lenah Valley track, then up Sawmill track, and back down Organ Pipes track and Pinnacle track to the Springs, which was the start and finish. I ran it with my dad. It was really hard going up Sawmill track, but I caught lots of people and I felt really good down Pinnacle track, and overall it was extremely fun. I came first female in the under 15 category, and I beat all the senior women in the race too. I also got a spot prize. I am very proud of myself, and I found it incredibly fun. -Grace 5/6A |
