Dear Families
We are in week 6 of learning at South Hobart Primary School and it is never a dull moment. NAPLAN is well underway, Mr Nichols has orienteering in for P.E classes in the next couple of weeks, the grade 6’s are busy planning in their leadership roles for Harmony Day and World Down Syndrome Day, SRC representatives will be selected soon, ECE choir has started with Miss day and the grade 5-6 students have started Wednesday afternoon options.
On Friday 7 March the athletics carnival was so full of energy. It was great to see so many students getting into the house spirit, the domain was a sea of green, yellow and purple.
The students enjoyed a fantastic athletics carnival, including both track and field events. All student participated in events; they were engaged in behaviours that demonstrated great sportsmanship.
Thank you to Mr Nichols, staff and volunteers on making this such a great event.
In week 9, the School Association will hold it’s annual general meeting (AGM), during which new committee members will be formed. There are 4 parent member vacancies on the committee. Nominations to join the committee closed on the 13 March and then the voting will start on the 20 March and close on the 27 March. Julieann Graham is the returning officer for these nominations and will notify candidates on Friday 28 March.
All parents with children enrolled at South Hobart Primary School can join or attend the meeting even if not on the committee.
In week 9 on Thursday 3 April 9am-9:40am we will be having open classrooms. This is an opportunity for parents to come into classes and see what their child has been doing in their classrooms.
A reminder to parents that if you have not already, please sign up to your child’s Seesaw account using the QR code sent home on Thursday 6 March.
Next week is one of the schools’ biggest events organised by our amazing parents - Ride the Rivulet. This is a great opportunity to be involved in a great community event. This year if student would like to bring their bikes to school, we would like to offer a space to park your bikes in a safe environment. The blue court will be made a no go zone for students and bikes can be safely parked here for the day.
Also, just a reminder to parents that during events like Ride the Rivulet, welcome BBQ or other school events after school, that your child or children need to be supervised. They cannot be attending without a supervising adult. If they are found to not be supervised after school a phone call will be made home.
Bec Corney
Acting Principal during Anne Reeves absence.

The more you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn the more places you will go.
Supporting your child to learn to read is one of the most valuable things you can do for their future. This includes reading aloud to your child.
All students at South Hobart Primary School will be provided with a reading log to track their reading.
Your support in ensuring that your child uses their reading log and returns it regularly to their teacher is appreciated. By creating good reading habits at home, you’re helping your child develop an essential skill that will benefit them throughout their life.
Book Club Issue #2 is coming home today!
A few orders from Issue #1 have arrived and are heading home today, but we’re still waiting on most of the orders to arrive. Trust that we will get them to you as soon as we can!
But in the meantime, have a browse at Issue #2 and see if anything catches your eye! Orders for Issue #2 close on March 26th.
Did you know that every purchase you make on Book Club earns our school 15% of the order value in Scholastic Rewards? The school library uses these to purchase more books and educational resources for the school. It all helps!
Book Club - Help needed
Scholastics Book Club for the school is run by parent volunteers. There is only one of us left this year after previous families have reached high school. I’m in need of some help! Time required is only about 2-3 hours twice a term, when the book orders arrive at school and need sorting. And if there’s a few of us, the time will be even shorter.
If you’re interested, please contact the office and they’ll put us in touch.
Thanks, Simone
It’s Harmony Week
To celebrate Harmony Week the Grade 6 Leadership have developed some great activities to promote harmony and getting along .
There will be a presentation available for teachers to share with their classes during the week explaining the importance of Harmony Day.
On Tuesday, 18th, we will be having a Cultural Dressup Day. Students can wear their cultural heritage outfit, orange for harmony or Australia’s green and gold.
On Tuesday and Wednesday there will be 3 legged races on the oval at recess and there will be a cultural game at lunch time.
During the week there will be a couple of activities for students to complete in their classrooms.
We want to make a long chain of paper people with each student decorating one.
We are also interested in the diversity of our cultural background and so are putting up a large world map for everybody to put a dot on the country their family originated from. (Parents, could you please talk to your child about this, so they know where to put their dot.)
There is NO cost involved for these activities.
Ride the Rivulet
Once again this fabulously fun event is happening on National Ride to School Day – Friday March 21st. Join more than 350,000 students across the nation who will ride, walk, scoot or skate to school!!!
This is a wonderful and fun school community event for all children (and their parents) of any skill level from kinder- grade 6. The event will run from 3.30-5pm. With support of the School Association there will be a FREE afternoon tea of sushi, fruit and biscuits, fun activities, prizes and a ride/race for each grade should your child wish to participate. Be a part of the action (even if your superpower is cheering on your friends)!!
Drum roll please…....We may have a local riding legend dropping by! Keep an eye out for correspondence coming soon on how to register your child electronically or manually.
Volunteers Make Magic Happen….
This event relies on the support of parent volunteers. There are lots of different ways you can help….please SIGN UP HERE TO VOLUNTEER .

Down Syndrome Awareness Day
Friday the 21st of March is Downs Syndrome Awareness Day.
Downs Syndrome Awareness Day is all about raising public awareness, promote inclusivity and support the wellbeing of those living with Downs Syndrome
To help celebrate the differences amongst us and to understand and support people with Downs Syndrome, students are encouraged to wear odd socks as the 3 strands of Chromosome 21 just happen to look like socks.
Dear soccer family,
We are super excited to reach out and let you know about the soccer Fun-day taking place on Sunday, 23 March 11 - 3pm at the school.
This will be an amazing day to celebrate the start of the 2025 Soccer Season. We will have lots of games for the children, lots of food, prizes, face painting, kit swap, and kit purchase. We will also have a special guest who will join us to show the skills that have made them number 1 in Australia and number 9 across the world.
In preparation for the day we need to get a rough idea for numbers. If you would like to join your community for an amazing day, please indicate via this form: https://forms.gle/rksy31xZBG2wriBc8
Update on soccer planning
We are still taking expressions of interest to join South Hobart Primary School Soccer. Expressions of Interest will close on the 30 March. We will be in touch nearer that time to let you know what the team situations look like. If you have yet to complete the expression of interest form ?, follow the link here: https://forms.gle/2GpDmktisXGNTeFC8
Football Australia Registration.
For the little one(s) to play with us, they will need to have a registered account through Football Australia, and that is where you pay the money for registration fee. We will be in touch soon, to provide you with the information and links to register with Football Australia.
Ticket To play
For those that might need a little more financial support, don't worry, cost will never be a barrier to play with our school Association. The state Government has a scheme called Ticket to Play, once you are registered with Ticket to Play, you can apply for two tickets to cover the cost, per child. Apply here: https://tickettoplay.tas.gov.au/ once you have the 'ticket' number, let us know and we will help you through the registration process. If you have any questions, concerns; please reach out, we will do everything we can to support children playing the beautiful game.

Soccer gear donation request
We’ll be having a soccer gear giveaway at the soccer fun day on Sunday 23rd March, participation by donation. Please bring any donations of both SHPS and Morton’s soccer clothing, boots or gloves to the fun day within an hour of the starting time, or you can leave donations at the office. Please spread the word! This is a fantastic way to fit your kids with the next size boots etc., but it relies on everyone remembering to donate their soccer gear first!
Community News - Tasmanian Bike Collective Cycle Challenge
The Tas Bike Collective Cycle Challenge is back for 2025! After our successful event launch
last year, we are excited to again be offering a great value experience that supports the
important work the Bike Collective does. I’m reaching out as the Event Manager of the Cycle
Challenge to share our 2025 event details with you.
Some quick event details are;
Event date: Sat, April 5, 2025
Event venue: Baskerville Raceway 473 Baskerville Road, Old Beach
Event website, so you can find out more: Cycle Challenge About | Tasmanian Bike Collective
Event entry cost: $20 per person
Entries open: Now
Entries Close March 23
Event format: Riders challenge themselves to do as many laps as they can with multiple
options available to them, on tarmac, off road, on an e- bike, or pedal powered bike.
Event Manager quote “The focus of the event is fun, family friendly and is our flagship
fundraiser. People can ride by themselves, as a team. Last year we had lots of people with
families and friends just coming along to ride and raise funds for the students in our
programs by being part of the day. Last year we raised just over $14,000 and this year we are
aiming for $25,000 to help us launch our mobile work shop program so we can support
more students. The event has been designed to be accessible for all skill levels and fitness
with different course options and a no pressure format, it’s a fun challenge and not a race.
There is also the Fairbrother kids challenges for little tackers who aren’t quite ready to take
on the full Cycle Challenge. Even if you haven’t dusted off the bike for a while it’s a great way
to get back into it and Bicycle Network Tasmanian have support through their Back on Your
Bike Program”
In case you are wondering, what does the Tasmanian Bike Collective do?
The Tasmanian Bike Collective mentors and supports young people through our hands on
learning-based bicycle workshops to develop work ready skills, confidence and dealing with
life’s tougher situations. Most of the young people in the program have life challenges that
make it harder for them to stay engaged in school, our programs help them turn that around
and stay engaged with education. We run 3 workshops - Risdon Vale, Clarence Plains/Rokeby
and the Huon Valley, supporting around 90 students each week. Everything we raise goes to
running our programs here in Tasmania. Also, as part of that work we restore and sell used
bikes and recycle any that can’t be saved.

Stranger Danger - Reminder
Just a reminder for our school community to work together to emphasise the importance of self-protective behaviour and personal safety messages, including avoiding approaches by strangers. We ask that families speak to their children and remind them to always be aware and alert and feel confident that they can report any issues whenever they feel unsafe.
