Dear Families
We have very quickly come to the end of the first term of the year. And what a busy term it has been! Along with classroom learning we have been busy with; PAT assessments, NAPLAN, Year 3 – 6 athletics, interschool athletics, whole school cross country, Hurricanes visit, football clinics, Year 5/6 options, School Association welcome BBQ, AGM and elections and much teacher professional learning!
Many thanks to Mrs Corney, Mrs Jubb, Mrs Rothwell, Mrs Poultney, Ms Peatling and Mrs Rice who in their leadership capacity lead the school in my recent absence. I include in my thanks all staff who worked with them, and for our students to progress school goals and priorities in this time.
Yesterday students participated in our very successful Cross Country Carnival. Despite an exciting start with the whole school on the oval due to a fire alarm, all events ran smoothly. Many thanks to Mr Nichols for his organisation and for preparing students for the event. Thanks also to all staff who supported students and made the event possible. This includes teachers, teacher assistants, admin and grounds staff – we all work together for our students.
Finally, I need to thank and recognise the students. I had many parents and staff comment to me, and I had witnessed this myself, how supportive and encouraging our students are of each other. We saw; students high fiving each other as they passed on the track, students stopping to help a peer who is injured or struggling, students running with a peer who needed some encouragement, students congratulating each other on their efforts (not just winning!) and students providing positive affirmations and support to peers. Well done to our students for showing us this wonderful part of our school community.
Thank you to the many parents, grandparents and family friends who came to school and supported our students. Thank you also to those of you who volunteered your time to act as marshals and officials on our course. We very much appreciate your time.
On Friday we have eleven students participating in the Champions Athletics Carnival. Congratulations to Grace, Amelie, Oliver, Julian, Florence, Matthew, Jack, George, Louis, Goldie and Ellie on being selected and all the best for your events!
Friday is also the final day of term one. I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and look forward to seeing you all back at school on Monday 28 April.
Regards
Anne Reeves

Today students are bringing home an envelope with paperwork for this camp. Please see the correspondence list for details of what you should be receiving. Students were asked to leave their envelopes sealed to ensure no paperwork is lost.

Lifting Literacy, Reading Priority – South Hobart Primary School Next term we will be opening the school library before school on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:30-9am for children to change their books more regularly. This is also to encourage the love and motivation for students to read. Parents are welcome to come in with their child to view and select books. |
- A firefighter from the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) is visiting our school from the 12-23 May (Term 2) to present a Home Fire Safety Program to our Prep to Grade 6 students.
- Kindergarten students, whilst not receiving a structured lesson, can expect a visit from the firefighter who will leave some free fun activities for the students to complete.
- The age appropriate program is designed to raise fire awareness in children and includes fun in class activities, videos, activity books, giveaways and a new kid’s website www.tfskids.com.au.
- Parents and other family members are also encouraged to participate by reading the information and assisting your child with the after school activities.
- The TFS aims to deliver appropriate fire safety education to every primary school child in Tasmania and is part of the TFS’s ongoing commitment to create a fire safe Tasmania.
EARLY CHILDHOOD
TFS receives regular requests from preschools and child care centres asking for firefighters to visit and teach children about home fire safety.
TFS does not deliver structured fire safety programs to children below primary school age. This decision was made based on research carried out by the Mental Health Services of the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Metropolitan Fire Brigade in Melbourne. This research indicated that:
- Children under the age of five had low retention of the information they had learned; and
- In some children, the information had actually stimulated their curiosity about fire and they had begun to play with fire.
TFS believes that parents and caregivers are the best people to make sure that very young children are safe from fire. To help with this, TFS has a fire safety website for parents, carers and teachers.
TFS has also developed free giveaways for young children that introduce them to the friendly firefighter characters that they will meet when they receive the School Fire Education Program including a colouring book, a money box shaped like a fire truck, and stickers with home fire safety messages for the whole family. Click here for free giveaways for your preschool or child care centre.
Interschools Athletics Carnival
On Wednesday the 2nd of April a team of athletes from SHPS, approx. 50, went to the Domain to compete against other schools in the Interschools Athletics. SHPS came third overall in Division A, our best ever! |
It was a great experience for all of us and everyone was inclusive, clapping and cheering everyone on, even other schools.
We started the day with the 1500m race, then we moved onto the 100m races. We also competed in the shot put, vortex, and long jump.
As some of you may be aware, Mrs Caitlin Rice has moved to Blackman’s Bay Primary School for term 2, where she is working in the capacity of Advanced Skills Teacher (AST). Congratulations Caitlin on having your hard work and leadership skills recognised.
We look forward to welcoming you back to South Hobart in term three.
We still have over fifty students who have not had their parents sign up for See Saw. QR codes to access this were sent home to families in week 5 of this term. Please sign up to this as it is an important platform for your child’s teacher to share learning that is occurring in the classroom with you. From time-to-time teachers also use See Saw to share class messages.
Please see your child’s teacher if you require another QR code or if you need assistance.
Year 6 students whose families are not yet signed up are receiving another copy of the QR code today as this avenue of communication will be highly utilised in the lead up to camp.
A reminder that all bikes parked at school need to be secured with a reputable bike lock.
This applies to the bike parking behind the hall and in front of the school.
Nivi – I like it when we made the homes for the animals.
Finn - I liked it when we played the game with the popsicle sticks when we had to get them all green.
Henry – It was really, really fun when we had the Forestry talk.
Harriet – I liked the game when we started as seeds and grew into big trees.

Community Notice - SHPS Water Polo Team
We are seeking expressions of interest for grade 5/6 students for the school waterpolo team in 2025 held over term 2. Training is usually (tbc) on Tuesday evenings from 7:30-8:30 pm and games are on Friday evening both normally held at the Doone Kennedy Aquatic Centre. Teams are mixed and the focus is on fun and participation. It does require some swimming ability and children should be able to swim 50m unaided. Coaches are generally older, former South Hobart Primary students.
Previous years have been fun and a great way of increasing students aquatic and team skills. Whilst this is a South Hobart Primary School Team it is not coordinated by the school and requires parental support for it to occur. Could anyone interested please email Mel melanie.gr.east@gmail who can get your child's name down and email you more information.
Last minute registrations for Water Polo are due today. Please email Mel melanie.gr.east@gmail.com
